One of the reasons agricultural soils are in trouble worldwide is that most chemical fertilizers have “fillers or inert ingredients” in them.  These fillers are used to hold the N-P-K elements so they do not volatilize. Chemical fillers are primarily salts, chlorides and formaldehydes, all of which may be toxic to soil microbial communities.
